The SURA Arts Academy from the Arab American National Museum toured Dearborn City Hall to give the students an opportunity to not only see the facility, but interview members of the staff about what their role is in keeping things running smoothly in the city. Some of the students’ photographs are featured in this news program. Officers are sworn in at the Dearborn Police Department.
SURA Arts Academy is a youth photography program run by the Arab American National Museum utilizing Community Arts Partnerships faculty designed to teach middle school students about culture using photography and video as their tool. C+PAD (community+public art: DETROIT), Community Art Partnerships’ (CAP) sister program, that also works out of CCS, is looking for help:
C+PADÂ supports long-term, large scale art projects (think DNAC’s Redford Library Mural, but bigger!)
If you need to fulfill service learning hours, etc. this could be a great opportunity for you!

This past Saturday, the DNAC welcomed guest Nicole McDonald into the classroom. Nicole is a stencil artist and she demonstrated & shared her techniques and processes. Most of her work incorporates themes that are decorative and political in content.
We learned that Nicole uses unexpected materials in her craft. Most often, she uses watercolor paper to cut the stencils; the paper’s water resistance and weight make it the stencil plate material of choice as it supports repeated prints.
Many thanks to Nicole, Erin, and Adrianne for an informative, creative demonstration.
CAP will be archiving all of our photos on Flickr, a photo sharing site that will allow us to organize photos every week by program (DNAW-EAST, DNAC, etc.). This will allow you to easily share images with friends and family, through email, Facebook, Twitter, etc. and you can download the images for yourself as well!
