The SURA Arts Academy from the Arab American National Museum toured Dearborn City Hall to give the students an opportunity to not only see the facility, but interview members of the staff about what their role is in keeping things running smoothly in the city. Some of the students’ photographs are featured in this news program. Officers are sworn in at the Dearborn Police Department.
SURA Arts Academy is a youth photography program run by the Arab American National Museum utilizing Community Arts Partnerships faculty designed to teach middle school students about culture using photography and video as their tool. Future Cities: Detroit
Students at Bunche Elementary-Middle School collaborated on a 3D model of what they think Detroit should look like in the future.
Over the course of the semester, they explored media portrayals of Detroit and examined ways to change the city so in the future, positive stories would far outweigh the negative. As their ideas developed, students worked together to build a 3D model of Detroit, carefully including components that would encourage positive activities (green space, efficient public transportation, local shopping options, etc…).
The artists and staff of DNAC want to share their work with you, Saturday, December 17 from 4:00 to 5:00 PM in the CAP classroom (T604), located in CCS’s Taubman Center. Please join us for refreshments and artwork. DNAC students worked under the direction of artist Erin Martinez and Adrianne Davis this fall to create a beautiful body of work worth seeing. Please come by and say hello!
C+PAD (community+public art: DETROIT), Community Art Partnerships’ (CAP) sister program, that also works out of CCS, is looking for help:
C+PADĀ supports long-term, large scale art projects (think DNAC’s Redford Library Mural, but bigger!)
If you need to fulfill service learning hours, etc. this could be a great opportunity for you!
CAP
Kara, Joye, and Juan have recently started working with a group of students at the Brightmoor Community Center. These sessions will run through December. We’re looking forward to following their progress!
